and beautiful gardens, offers an appealing combination of sophisticated
culture and nostalgia for a way of life of years gone by. The streets
full of pedestrians, Victorian houses, restaurants and shops all
maintained with picture ready perfection provides visitors with
the best of modern amenities while feeling like they have stepped
into the charming lifestyle of 200 years ago.
Shopping
Our
downtown heritage district offers a wide variety of stores and quality
merchandise. Along the walk from Lyons House to the oldest golf
course in Canada and lakefront at one end, to historic Fort George
at the other end, you’ll pass unique theme shops offering specialized
items. Candy stores, bakeries, a cigar specialty shop, photographic
supplies, toys, fine china and figurines, books, fashion for all
ages, gifts galore and souvenirs you’ll be proud to take home.
Museums
It
should come as no surprise that a town as rich in heritage as Niagara-on-the-Lake
abounds in historic museums. One of the most notable is the Niagara
Historical Society Museum , located one block away from Lyons House.
The first structure in Ontario built solely as a museum, it houses
more than 20,000 artifacts.
Located
in the historic village of Queenston , the Mackenzie Heritage Printery
is Ontario ’s only publishing museum with working displays. While
in Queenston, don’t miss a visit to the Laura Secord Homestead for
it was Laura’s bravery that changed the course of the 1812 War.
Fort
George National Historic Site of Canada
Open April 1-Oct 31 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Guided tours year round by appointment
Here, history is alive. A visit to the site allows you not only
to hear about history, but to actually experience the sights, sounds,
smells and tastes of a garrison in the early 19th century. You can
watch soldiers perform drill or listen to the music of the fife
and drum corps as both prepare for battle on the Niagara frontier.
Inside Fort George your pace and your pulse will quicken, as you
become caught up in the atmosphere of anxious preparations for war.
Time has stalled here. It is the eve of the War of 1812, and the
British Army still occupies the Fort.
Fort George is the focus of the interpretation programme for visitors
to the Niagara Complex. Each summer, staff in period uniform conduct
activities typical of the garrison prior to the war.
Galleries
The
attractive river-side building and grounds of the Niagara Pumphouse
Visual Arts Centre offers added insight into why the town is home
to a large and thriving arts community. The restored Pumphouse houses
a gallery, where monthly Sunday afternoon salons introduce local
artists. The exhibitions are open to the public on weekends and
most weekdays.
The
beautiful Preservation Gallery on King Street displays works by
Trisha Romance Alex Colville and Philip Craig.
The
River Brink Gallery in Queenston displays art, sculptures and precious
antiques amassed by Samuel E. Weir.
Theatre
Niagara-on-the-Lake
is proud to host a world-class theatre festival, with one of the
top acting ensembles in the world.
The
Shaw Festival Theatre marks the 2004 season with 12 productions
from April to December at three wonderful and unique venues, all
located minutes from one another and from Lyons House.
Antiquing
At
Forum Gallery on Niagara Stone Road and at Lakeshore Antiques on
Lakeshore, you’ll find a broad range of antiques and collectibles,
from small jewelry to fine antique furniture.
Each
location offers the advantage of several antique dealers under one
roof, ensuring a good chance to find that long sought-after treasure.
Golf
The
game of golf has changed dramatically over time, but Niagara has
been a haven for golfers since 1875. The first and oldest golf course
in North America was created by John Geale Dickson, grandson of
Catherine Lyons, and Charles Hunter on Fort Mississauga Common.
It was considered to be of the highest standards, drawing international
tournaments and attracting notable golfers.
The
tradition continues today. In 2003, the Royal Niagara Golf Club
hosted Skins Games with professionals like Sergio Garcia and John
Daly playing on its greens.
Let
us help you book your games in advance at Royal Niagara, NOTL Golf
Club, Peach Trees or Eagle Valley Golf Club.
